Attempted U-Turn In St. Lucie County Kills 3

In August 2025, a semi-truck trying to make a U-turn in an “official use only” area of Florida’s Turnpike led to a fatal crash. Three people died in the accident at the Turnpike’s 171-mile marker, near the St. Lucie County border, as their van was struck by the tractor-trailer. The van became wedged between the tractor-trailer and the wall as the larger vehicle attempted to turn around. As of this writing, no charges have been filed, but it may occur in the near future.
Possible Negligence Involved In Crash
Accidents involving tractor-trailers are more likely, in general, to lead to serious or even life-changing injuries than crashes involving personal vehicles. Tractor-trailers are much heavier than the average vehicle, and require much more stopping distance than a car or personal truck does – if driving 55 miles per hour, it will take almost 200 feet to stop, while a civilian car driving the same speed takes only 133 feet to do the same.
Negligence can make the damage even worse. Details released by the Florida Highway Patrol state that the tractor-trailer crossed several lanes of traffic in order to try and reach an access road reserved for official use. Given the average size and weight of a loaded tractor-trailer, a strong case can be made for arguing this was a negligent act – it certainly does not show any intent to uphold the duty of care owed to other road users under Florida law.
Can File Against Multiple Defendants
If you have been seriously injured or lost a loved one in an accident involving a tractor-trailer, you do have the right to file a civil lawsuit against the driver (and potentially, other defendants) if you believe that their negligence was the cause of the crash. There are three criteria that an injured plaintiff must establish in order to mount an effective case against a negligent defendant or defendants: a breach of the duty of care owed by road users to each other, a showing of actual injury, and establishing that the defendant’s actions were the direct cause of the plaintiff’s injuries.
In the St. Lucie County case, the Florida Highway Patrol reported that the driver and passenger in the tractor-trailer both survived with no injuries. While an injured plaintiff, if they had survived the crash, would be able to file suit against both the driver and the passenger, they may also be able to file a claim in what is known as vicarious liability against the driver’s employer. Consulting an attorney before filing suit can help clarify your options in terms of how to present your case.
