Man Killed While Trying To Cross Florida’s Turnpike

In mid-December 2025, a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a tractor-trailer as he tried to cross Florida’s Turnpike. The incident happened in Miami-Dade, near Southwest 8th Street, when an “oncoming tractor-trailer” struck the man in the middle of the road. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, a sadly common outcome in pedestrian accidents – particularly when tractor-trailers are involved.
Deadlier Than Usual
Pedestrian accidents are unfortunately common in Florida for a variety of reasons. As one might imagine, pedestrians are more likely to die in these crashes than those in cars, but this is doubly true when the vehicle involved in the crash is a tractor-trailer. Tractor-trailers, also known as semi-trucks, have a history of causing disproportionate amounts of serious injuries and fatalities, causing 53 percent of the fatal accidents involving large trucks according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) data.
It makes sense when one contemplates the size and weight of those involved in this type of accident; between those and the increased stopping distance required by a tractor-trailer means, unfortunately, that those with minimal protection like pedestrians will often be injured or killed due to the sheer amount of force that hits them. That said, it is possible for a pedestrian to be taken by surprise, even by such large vehicles. The man on Florida’s Turnpike may not have had time to avoid the accident.
Worth It To Sue?
If you or a loved one has been involved in a tractor-trailer accident as a pedestrian, it is very likely that you have serious injuries, as well as possibly losing someone you love. Many people feel intimidated at the prospect of filing suit against a driver for a commercial trucking company (or against the company itself), but you have the right to do so, particularly if their negligence was the direct cause of the harm you have suffered.
If your injuries are “significant and permanent,” Florida even allows you to bypass its no-fault system and permits you to simply file suit in court against the people or entities responsible. For more minor injuries, the state instead wants injured plaintiffs to file a claim with their insurer, but the legislature has realized that major injuries will often require more compensation than most people carry in insurance coverage.
