Motorcyclist Killed In Sumter County After Striking Tractor-Trailer

TractorTrailer

In early June 2025, a young motorcyclist lost his life in an accident in Sumter County when he struck the back of a tractor-trailer at a high rate of speed. The tractor-trailer was stopped, waiting to turn right, and the motorcyclist could not stop in time. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the driver of the tractor-trailer did not sustain any injuries. Even when tractor-trailers are driven safely and properly, they can pose dangers that an ordinary car would not.

Tractor-Trailer Accidents Are Disproportionately Dangerous

Tractor-trailer accidents often lead to injuries and deaths, though most of them happen to other drivers or pedestrians. Tractor-trailers are very large vehicles, and even when unloaded can outweigh a standard car or pickup truck by several thousand pounds – between this outsize weight and the longer stopping distance tractor-trailers require, it is unfortunately common for other drivers, passengers, or pedestrians to get the worst of a collision.

Motorcyclists in particular are at risk of injury or death in a wreck, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimating that they are 28 times more likely to die in a crash than a driver of a car or truck. Riders simply lack the protection of a car or larger vehicle – all that is between them and the road is their clothing and any protective gear they choose to wear.

Did The Tractor-Trailer Driver Act Negligently?

In the Sumter County incident, it is likely that the motorcyclist would have been deemed largely responsible for their own injuries, meaning that if they were found more than 50 percent at fault, Florida law would prevent them from recovering any damages. As of this writing, there is no evidence that the tractor-trailer driver acted negligently, meaning that liability would likely have been attached to the motorcyclist.

If you are involved in a crash where a tractor-trailer driver acts negligently, however, you may seek damages from the driver, and if they were engaged in the scope of their employment, you may be able to sue their employer as well. While each case is different, Florida law holds that if one can prove an employee committed a tortious act – essentially the civil law version of a crime – while engaged in furthering their employer’s business, their employer may also wind up on the proverbial hook.
