Unique Causes Of Commercial Motor Vehicle Accidents

Truck_Road

Commercial vehicle (CV) accidents are more common than the average person might think. While they still happen relatively infrequently, the sheer number of large commercial vehicles on Florida roads mean that the numbers have risen. While the immediate causes of these types of crashes are fairly similar to those that cause standard car accidents, there are certain peculiarities that occur more frequently – or only occur – in accidents involving large commercial vehicles.

Stopping Distance Differs Significantly

One major difference between car accidents and accidents involving commercial vehicles is the stopping distance of each vehicle. Standard passenger cars and trucks have an average stopping distance of around 130 feet, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA), while fully loaded commercial vehicles require almost 200 feet to stop safely. A driver who does not know this may simply not leave enough time to avoid a collision.

Blind Spots Endanger Cars

Another factor that must be considered when driving near a commercial vehicle is that very often, its mirrors are aligned in such a way that blind spots are created – that is, spaces in which the driver cannot physically see a smaller car. When a smaller vehicle is occupying one of these spaces, they must be aware that the CV’s driver cannot see them and act accordingly. While a driver must check their blind spots, drivers of other vehicles should also be aware they are there.

CVs Make Wide Turns

Still another factor to keep in mind when sharing the road with a commercial vehicle is that many of them are forced to make wide turns, either due to the heft of the load they are carrying or because of their structure (such as a tractor-trailer). It is unfortunately quite common for a driver not to see a smaller car or a motorcyclist as they turn, which can in turn cause serious injury if the smaller vehicle jumps the proverbial gun in terms of turn order.
