Another Fatal Pedestrian Accident On I-75
Sometimes a road accident will seem like a Greek tragedy, where everything that can go wrong does go wrong. A recent fatal tractor-trailer accident on I-75 appears to have occurred in this way. According to the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), after his car had struck another vehicle and run off the road, a Boynton Beach man was thought to have run away from the scene. Later, however, he was found after being struck by a tractor-trailer on I-75 itself, deceased at the scene. Law enforcement is handling this event as two separate accidents, but both can be instructive to the average Florida driver.
Pedestrian Accidents Are All Too Common
Auto accidents are sadly common on Florida roads, and when they involve tractor-trailers, the injuries and damages can ramp up to another level. The driver of the wrecked car was not technically a pedestrian, but anyone walking outside their vehicle on a busy interstate will face the same danger as a dedicated pedestrian, including serious injury and death, and Florida’s Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) estimates that over 10,000 pedestrian accidents occurred in 2022 (the most recent available data).
The CCSO’s theory is that the man was searching for items in his car, standing on the shoulder of the road or just in the lane of traffic, and failed to see the tractor-trailer that struck him. The first accident (between the wrecked car and the other vehicle) is still being investigated, but the second accident (between the pedestrian and the tractor-trailer) currently appears to be nothing more than a tragic accident.
Are The Accidents Connected?
In the Crisp County accident, the tractor-trailer driver stopped of his own accord and informed authorities at the scene that he believed he had struck something. This was the right choice, given that leaving the scene of an accident can be a crime, but it also shows that the driver did not have any intent to cause harm to anyone, and was willing to be cooperative with the investigation regardless.
His evidence may be important both in regard to what he was doing at the moment of impact, but also for his impressions of the initial impact between the car and the other vehicle, if he has any. Normally in a pedestrian accident case, one only needs to investigate one impact, but in this case, there were two, and the question of whether the first contributed to the second would need to be investigated if the deceased person’s family ever decided to seek damages.
